School Closure Band Update #1

Dear HHS Band Parents and Students,

I hope you’re staying safe and healthy at home.  I wanted to highlight some important details related to band and this unprecedented school closure.  Please don’t hesitate to email me back if you have any questions.

First of all, I want to assure all travelers for the New York trip I am still working with EDT on finding a new travel window for us.  When something is decided I will let you know.  At this point, we’re still waiting for things to settle down before we think about locking in a date.

The following band performances have been cancelled:

  • March 17 Spring Concert (may be rescheduled)
  • April 7 Music Booster Meeting (we may explore online virtual meeting options)
  • April 8 University of Portland Jazz Festival (will not be rescheduled)
  • April 17-18 CBC Band Festival (will not be rescheduled)
  • April 25 Music Booster Benefit Dinner (will be rescheduled as soon as we get an idea of what the school schedule will look like past April 27)

At this point all other band activities from April 27 on are still being planned, but that could change.

The Music Boosters were preparing to launch orders for our annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale this week.  They are still working with each other and with New Leaf Greenhouse to determine if it can still be pulled off.  Stay tuned for more information.

As an aside, plesae know we are working very hard to try and reschedule the Benefit Dinner and pull off the Mother’s Day Plant sale.  Those two events fund our music program with nearly $50,000 of crucial support for our students and program.  When these events are rescheduled please help support them!

I’m sure many of you are waiting for teachers to send you things you can do from home.  The district and teachers are still working on a plan to deliver some sort of educational resources to students in a responsible and equitable way.  In the meantime, I have posted recordings for all of our Benefit Dinner music on the website at www.hockinsonmusic.com/listening.  Students can begin to practice this music at home utilizing the recordings for reference.  Don’t forget to use your warm-up book to get your practice session started!  Jazz Band folks should have 2 classes worth of music to practice.  Please try and get a little bit of practice time in each day; even 15-20 minutes will go a long way toward keeping up your chops!

Since hygiene is a the top of everyone’s mind, please consider cleaning your instrument (especially if you’ve been feeling sick).  Here’s a playlist of YouTube videos to help you properly clean and maintain your instrument:  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0mGGPGeweBfX1xIPNw5etkqaGVWJhSAW&fbclid=IwAR3VkAUc4JO5HVaoCmZgj_PbCcLXwUbkXoiAT1Q8B-zyHqNQfVwYcowSxtk

If you happened to forget any items in the band room before you left last Friday please let me know.  There may be a way for me to help you retrieve those items if I can coordinate with district officials.

More to come later this week!  Stay healthy and practice!
